A QuickBooks subscription error is any message saying QuickBooks cannot confirm, or no longer finds, an active plan. Several different messages share that label, and each needs a different fix. Read the exact words on your screen, confirm Desktop or Online, check your plan status, then open the one page that matches.
Blocked right now and not sure which message you have? Call 1-802-778-9005 or send the details with the no-login form on this page: a screenshot or the exact words of the message, Desktop or Online, and your edition and year. Support hours: Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day.
QuickBooks subscription error flowchart: confirm Desktop or Online, read the exact message, note when it appears, check the plan status, then open the matching page
A QuickBooks subscription error is a family of messages, not one error. Each one means QuickBooks could not confirm an active plan, or found that the plan ended, during startup, install, update, registration or a license sync. QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online show different messages, so the product and the exact words decide the fix.
The QuickBooks Desktop messages on this page fall into six families:
QuickBooks Online has its own account messages, such as a billing problem, an ended subscription, or a Subscribe Now banner.
QuickBooks Desktop for Windows: Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Accountant Desktop Plus, and Enterprise (Diamond, Gold, Platinum and Accountant). QuickBooks Online appears only in the routing table and two FAQs. Mac readers: send the details instead of following the Windows pages. For hosted setups, ask the provider first.
Product facts checked on October 20, 2026. Intuit stopped selling the Plus products and Enhanced Payroll to new US customers after September 30, 2024. Existing subscribers can still renew, and Enterprise is still sold.
This guide turns a vague QuickBooks subscription error into one named message and one next page. It holds no fix steps. Every check on it is read-only: it looks at menus, messages and your account status, and asks you to change nothing while you find your message.
Find the exact words of your QuickBooks subscription error in the first table if you use QuickBooks Desktop, or the second if you use QuickBooks Online. Each row names one page. Where a row needs a second key, such as your plan status, the row says so. No match means you send the details.
Write down the message word for word, or take a screenshot. A program on the computer is QuickBooks Desktop; a browser tab is QuickBooks Online. Plan status is read in the Customer Account Management Portal (camps.intuit.com), called the portal here. If no row matches, send the details with the no-login form on this page.
| Message on your screen | When it appears | What it usually means | Go to |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Your QuickBooks subscription has lapsed” | At startup or while you work | QuickBooks could not verify the plan | Plan active in the portal: QuickBooks subscription lapsed with an active plan. Plan ended, canceled, suspended or a payment problem: QuickBooks subscription ended, canceled or payment failed |
| A pop-up says the subscription has expired, often with a days-left warning | At startup | Shown for ended plans and, in user reports, for active plans too | Plan active and you renewed recently: QuickBooks registration error after renewal. Plan active, no renewal: license sync guide. Plan not active: QuickBooks subscription ended, canceled or payment failed |
| The company file opens in view-only mode, with no lapsed message | When you open the file | Editing is blocked | Plan active: the same fix as the expired pop-up; support replies link it to license data that has not caught up with the plan. Renewed recently: QuickBooks registration error after renewal. No renewal: license sync guide. Plan ended: export data with QuickBooks view-only mode and data export, renew with QuickBooks subscription ended, canceled or payment failed |
| A notice that the one-year view-only access period is over | After a cancellation | View-only access has ended | QuickBooks view-only mode and data export |
| “Sorry, we need to verify your subscription before installing QuickBooks Desktop.” | During install or update | QuickBooks could not confirm the plan during setup | verify your QuickBooks subscription |
| “Sorry, it looks like you need a subscription to install QuickBooks Desktop.” or “We are sorry, it looks like you need a subscription to start using QuickBooks Desktop.” | During install or update; the second also in one user report at startup | Same family as the row above | verify your QuickBooks subscription |
| A registration or validation screen still blocks you after a confirmed renewal | After renewal | The renewal is done but this computer still asks | QuickBooks registration error after renewal |
| A message that license data could not be synchronized with Intuit | After Sync License Data Online | The sync itself failed | License sync guide |
| “Contact Support To Complete Activation” | During registration | Activation did not finish | After a renewal: QuickBooks registration error after renewal. Otherwise: license sync guide |
| Error 3371, status code 11118 | At startup | License data could not be loaded | Error 3371 guide |
| A payroll subscription message, or a payroll validation error such as PS036 | During a payroll update or activation | A payroll service issue, separate from the Desktop plan | Payroll subscription verification page |
| A notice that your QuickBooks version is no longer supported | In the product | Support, payroll, Payments, bank feeds and security updates end | Data: QuickBooks view-only mode and data export. Upgrade: upgrade guide |
| An Intuit email about a failed payment or a suspended plan | Email, not on screen | A billing problem on the account | QuickBooks subscription ended, canceled or payment failed |
| “currently not subscribed to any services”, or any other wording | Varies | Not confirmed as a Desktop message | Send the details with the form |
The expired pop-up and view-only rows are the places where the words alone do not decide the page. Your plan status in the portal does.
| Message or banner | Where it appears | What it usually means | Go to |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Invalid Company Status: Subscription period has ended or canceled or there was a billing problem” | Reported inside apps that sync with QuickBooks Online | The QuickBooks Online plan ended or has a billing problem | Restore the plan in your Intuit account. Auto-renewal questions: see the QuickBooks Online auto-renewal guide |
| A message that the company is not subscribed to QuickBooks Online Plus | At sign-in or when a company opens | An account state, or a display problem | Your Intuit account billing, then send the details if it persists |
| A Subscribe Now banner or trial days left on a plan you paid for | QuickBooks Online home | Can be a second company on the same sign-in | Your Intuit account and the company list |

QuickBooks Desktop is a program installed on your computer, with a Help menu that includes Manage My License. QuickBooks Online runs in a web browser, and its billing sits under the Settings gear. Knowing which one shows the QuickBooks subscription error stops you following fixes written for the other product.
This test only looks at menus. Do not select anything that starts a sync, an update or a payment change. Note how you start QuickBooks: a program window from a desktop icon or the Start menu, or a web address in a browser tab.
Two panels: an installed program window with a Help menu listing Manage My License, and a browser window with a Settings gear leading to Subscriptions and billing, or Account and settings on some accounts
In a program window, open the Help menu and look for Manage My License. Close the menu without selecting anything.
You see: Manage My License in the list. That confirms QuickBooks Desktop.
If it fails: if the Help menu has no Manage My License, write down what it does show and send the details with the no-login form on this page.
In a browser tab, select the Settings gear. Look for Subscriptions and billing; some accounts show Account and settings with a Billing & subscription tab instead. Read only.
You see: the billing area. That confirms QuickBooks Online.
If it fails: if you find no billing area, write down what the Settings menu shows and send the details with the form.
In QuickBooks Desktop, press F2 (or Ctrl + 1) to open the Product Information window. Write down the product and release it shows, then close the window.
You see: your product details, which you need for the routing pages and the form.
You can now say Desktop or Online, and use the matching lookup table on this page.
If a message blocks QuickBooks before any menu appears, note the exact words. After two attempts, stop and send the details with the form or call 1-802-778-9005.
To check your plan status, sign in to the Customer Account Management Portal at camps.intuit.com with the email the product was registered with, open the QuickBooks Desktop details, and read the status. Active or not active decides which page fixes your QuickBooks subscription error.
The Customer Account Management Portal is called the portal on this page. This check only reads: do not change the payment method, cancel or reactivate anything. Only the primary contact can change payment details. Type camps.intuit.com yourself rather than using an email link.
Go to camps.intuit.com and sign in with the Intuit account and the email address the product was registered with.
You see: your products.
If it fails: use the forgot user ID or password link. If sign-in fails twice, stop and send the details with the no-login form on this page.
Under your products and services, find QuickBooks Desktop and select its Details.
You see: the license details and a status.
If the product is missing: you may have signed in with a different email. Sign out and use Claim Account to link the other email. A product bought through a partner may also be missing. If it is still not listed, stop and send the details with the form.
Account portal page with the QuickBooks Desktop entry, its Details link and a status row, marked read only
Note whether the plan reads as active or not active, and any word about payment, suspension or cancellation. Note the product year if the entry shows it.
You see: one status you can name.
| Status and message | Next page |
|---|---|
| Active, and the message says “subscription has lapsed” | QuickBooks subscription lapsed with an active plan |
| Active, the expired pop-up or view-only mode, and you renewed recently | QuickBooks registration error after renewal |
| Active, the expired pop-up or view-only mode, and no renewal | License sync guide |
| Not active, and you want to renew or fix the payment | QuickBooks subscription ended, canceled or payment failed |
| Not active, and you need to read or export data | QuickBooks view-only mode and data export |
| Product not listed after Claim Account | Send the details with the form |
If you are not the primary contact and cannot reach that person, or the portal will not load after two attempts, stop. Send the details with the form or call 1-802-778-9005. Support hours: Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day.
A QuickBooks subscription error that appears during install or update belongs to the verify-subscription page. One that appears at startup or while you work belongs to the lapsed, expired or license sync pages. Whether one computer or every computer shows it also changes where the fix starts, so check both before you choose.
These checks only read. First write down what you were doing when the message appeared: opening QuickBooks, installing, updating, registering after a renewal, or running a payroll update. Have a second computer with QuickBooks installed at hand if you have one. If QuickBooks runs on a hosted server, ask the provider or send the details with the no-login form on this page instead.
For a startup message, open QuickBooks and the company file on another computer where QuickBooks is installed. For an install or update message, do not start an install or update just to test. Ask whether anyone has seen the message on another computer.
You see: the message again, or no message.
Write down “one computer” or “every computer”.
If it fails: if you have only one computer, write “one computer only” and move on.
| What you found | Where to go |
|---|---|
| Install or update, any number of computers | verify your QuickBooks subscription. It uses the same one-or-all answer to choose its fix |
| Registering after a renewal | QuickBooks registration error after renewal |
| Startup or while you work, one computer | The lookup row for your exact message. Tell that page it is one computer |
| Startup or while you work, every computer | Check the plan status in the portal first, then use the lookup row for your message |
| Payroll update | Payroll subscription verification page |
If a second message appears, note both. After two attempts, stop and send the details with the form or call 1-802-778-9005.
A QuickBooks subscription error can show after a successful payment. Users report the expired pop-up and view-only mode while the portal shows an active plan, and support replies link these cases to a renewal that QuickBooks has not recognized yet. Your plan status, not the pop-up, decides which page fits.
The same expired pop-up leads to two different pages: plan active goes to the registration or license sync page, plan ended goes to the expired or failed renewal page
Read the status at camps.intuit.com, QuickBooks Desktop, Details. Change nothing.
You see: active or not active. Treat any days-left count as a reason to act now, not as a schedule.
You have one page to open. Do not buy a new subscription before the status is clear.
If the portal shows active and the count is at two days or fewer, or a weekend is close, do not wait for the fix pages alone. Send the details with the no-login form on this page or call 1-802-778-9005.
The lapsed message itself does not affect your company data. That statement covers that message only. When a plan has truly ended, separate access rules apply, and the rules for what still opens are on the expired and view-only pages, so read those before you act on any timeline.
For the message “Your QuickBooks subscription has lapsed”, the company data is not affected.
An ended plan follows separate access rules: what still opens, what is view-only, what can be exported, and for how long. Missed payments, holds and renewal: QuickBooks subscription ended, canceled or payment failed. View-only access and export: QuickBooks view-only mode and data export.
Some users report access ending earlier than expected, so act on those pages rather than on a forum reply or a vendor page.
If the file will not open at all and payroll or a filing is due, send the details with the no-login form on this page now, or call 1-802-778-9005.
Get expert help with a QuickBooks subscription error when the message matches no row, you cannot tell Desktop from Online, the portal shows no product, or you are not the primary contact and cannot reach that person. Call sooner if payroll, a deadline or a weekend is close.
Intuit’s own route inside QuickBooks is Help, QuickBooks Help, Contact Us, after you sign in.
Send the details with the no-login form on this page. Use the form or call 1-802-778-9005. Include a screenshot or the exact words, Desktop or Online, edition and year, the portal status (active, not active or not sure), one computer or all, and when it appears. Do not send passwords. Support hours: Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day. Never share passwords during a remote session, and close the remote tool when the work is done.
Other contact routes: how to contact QuickBooks Desktop subscription support. Related hubs: QuickBooks Desktop subscription support and QuickBooks license errors.
Users ask these ten questions after a QuickBooks subscription error, usually when the message is close to, but not the same as, a lookup row. Each answer ends with a narrowing question, and your reply decides the next page or action. To send the details, use the no-login form on this page.
Not by itself. The plan status lives in your Intuit account, not on any one computer. In one reported case, a second computer kept warning because it had not caught up with a renewal made on another. Read the portal status before you decide.
To narrow it down: does the portal show your plan as active? If yes, work on the computer that shows the message, using the lookup row for its exact words. If not active, go to the expired or failed renewal page before you touch any computer.
This wording is not confirmed as a QuickBooks Desktop message. It has been reported in connection with a QuickBooks Online trial, or with signing in under a different account. Check which product you use, then which email you signed in with, before you follow any Desktop fix.
Your answer decides the next step: are you working in a web browser? If yes, check your Intuit account billing and the companies under your sign-in. If you are in QuickBooks Desktop, send a screenshot with the details, because it matches no Desktop row.
Not quite. Error 3371 with status code 11118 says QuickBooks could not initialize the license properties, so it is a license loading problem rather than a plan status message. It sits with the license errors and has its own page with its own checks.
Before you choose a page: does error 3371 appear by itself? If yes, open the Error 3371 guide. If a subscription message shows too, send both screenshots with the details.
No. Payroll is a separate subscription from the QuickBooks Desktop plan, with its own messages and validation errors, such as PS036. Payroll tax table updates need an active payroll subscription. Read which service the message names before you choose a page.
To pinpoint it: does the message name payroll or a service key? If yes, use the payroll subscription verification page. If it names only the QuickBooks subscription, use the Desktop lookup table.
In the reported case, it reflected the QuickBooks Online account. An app that syncs with QuickBooks Online showed a message about an ended subscription or a billing problem, and restoring the plan let the sync resume. Whether the words come from QuickBooks or the app is unclear.
Worth checking first: does QuickBooks Online open normally in your browser? If yes, ask the app’s support about the connection. If it also shows a billing or ended message, restore the plan in your Intuit account first.
A paid company and a trial company can sit under the same sign-in. The trial company shows the Subscribe Now banner and trial days left, even though your paid company is fine. Switch to the other company from the Settings gear, then check again.
Before you pay again: does your sign-in list more than one company? If yes, switch to the paid one. If only one is listed and it shows the banner, check billing in your Intuit account first.
No. Community forum staff cannot see or confirm payments. To confirm one, look for the payment confirmation email, read the status in the portal, or reach Intuit live support through Help, QuickBooks Help, Contact Us inside QuickBooks. A forum reply cannot tell you which page fits.
Before you post: do the confirmation email and the portal both show the plan as active? If yes, use the active branch of your lookup row, such as the expired pop-up row. If the portal shows not active, go to the expired or failed renewal page.
Not by itself. The Plus products stopped selling to new US customers after September 30, 2024, but existing subscribers can still renew and Enterprise is still sold. So the stop-sell alone does not mean your plan ended. Check your plan status before you assume it.
To narrow it down: does the portal show your plan as active? If yes, use the lookup table for your exact message. If it shows ended or a payment problem, the expired or failed renewal page covers renewing.
A product bought through a partner, or registered under another email, may not show when you sign in to the portal. Ask the person who bought it which email was used, then sign in with that email. Claim Account can link another email to your sign-in.
Before you call: do you know the email the product was registered with? If yes, sign in with it and read the status. If no, ask the accountant or reseller first, and send the details if nobody knows.
Partly. The install-time verify-subscription messages are listed for Mac Plus as well as Windows editions, and the editions listed for the lapsed message do not include Mac. The fix pages on this site are written for Windows, so a Mac reader should not follow their steps.
Worth checking first: does your message ask to verify the subscription during install? If yes, write down the exact words and send a screenshot with the details. If it is another message, check your plan status in the portal first, then send the details.
